OK, I fess up. I’m a raging introvert. I am not social. I don’t go to parties (and I never get invited), I don’t spontaneously chat to people in shops, and I don’t talk to the neighbours (who are they?). Oh, and I am not a ‘joiner’ – I ain’t a member of anything.
My late wife used to call me one sick puppy. But don’t blame me. My mum is exactly the same, as was her dad. I blame them. Ha ha.
Yet I make money every day, working from home, selling stuff over the internet. And even though I am an introvert I do talk to people by phone regularly – and I’m really good at it. If they’re quality people I enjoy talking to them – in fact I look forward to it. Sometimes my conversations are sales related, and they buy one of my big ticket products. Other times my calls are more training related because I have people who seek me out – wanting to emulate my success.
Imagine that. Me, a crazy introvert working with people all the time, and actually enjoying it. So it just goes to show that no matter what your handicap or limitation you can overcome it, and prosper.
Think of some of the most successful people out there. Try these names: Steve Jobs and George Lucas. Both introverts. Or what about these folk? Robert DeNiro, Johnny Depp and Glen Close? All introverts.
I remember very clearly something that one of my early mentors – who also happened to be an introvert – told me. He said this: ‘Kim, you need to know that I do not socialise. Once my work is done I go home, shut the door, talk to no one until I go back to work again. In a nutshell vocationally I am an extrovert, but socially I am introvert’. He was also in sales so it figures that for his work he HAD to be extrovert – the show must go on and all that. But his very essence was that of an introvert.
So can an introvert make it in a sales type business? Well clearly the answer is yes. In fact there are millions of introverts all over the world working in a multitude of different fields who are very successful. I think the difference between an introvert who doesn’t make it and one who does is simply a matter of ability and drive. Add those two ingredients to the mix and any introvert can make money.
So if you’re one of my crowd, don’t use it as a cop out. You can make just as much money as anyone else in your home business. All you need to do is develop your skills and foster a burning desire for success. As famous Amway rep Dexter Yager once said: ‘If the why is big enough, the facts don’t matter’
