What Are Common SEO Mistakes?

Even marketing professionals can sometimes fall into these common SEO pitfalls.   So, today I want to spend a few minutes going over the top 10 SEO mistakes to which we’re all susceptible. Look over your marketing website to make sure you’re not inadvertently lowering your search result page rankings.

1- Using the Wrong Keywords for SEO

How much time have you spent choosing the perfect keywords to describe your website and your services?   Most of us have spent a great deal of time choosing the right keywords. But how many of us have thought about choosing searchable keywords? Outside of trial and error, it’s difficult to pinpoint keywords that deliver optimal impact. The good news is there are several free online tools you can use to give you guidance in this area.

2- Not Writing a Title Tag with SEO in Mind

Title tags that use keywords are an essential part of building higher search results rankings. The title tag is the clickable link that shows-up on the search results page. You want those “invisible” keywords in your title tag because that is just as important to ranking higher in search results as using searchable keywords and phrases.

3- Flash Websites and Too Many Graphics

Those search spiders that index information for search engines can’t read flash or graphics. If you need a flash website to showcase work for your niche, build an html version or search engines will not be able to find you. If you use graphics as headers consider using text instead so search engine spiders can locate, then organize your information.

4- URLS without Keywords

While it’s possible for customers to find whether you have a keyword-rich URL or not, why not shoot for optimal results by inserting keywords into your URL? At minimum having a keyword infused URL will keep you a step above your competition.

5-Not Enough Content

Another top 10 mistake website operators make is building a website without enough keyword content or enough content–period. If you expect search engine results to turn-up your webpage, you have to create a fresh library of content that spiders can sift through for relevant information.

6-Business Owners Who Don’t Blog

Blogs tend to be content rich. If you’re trying to build a niche market and you don’t have a blog, chances are your competition is outranking you. Blogs help you create another opportunity to connect with your niche market, drive-up your website traffic, and by route, your web rankings.

7-Spamming Backlinks

Linking your site to others and others to your website is not always a smart move. If your website backlinks to niche markets not relevant to yours, backlinks can hurt rather than help you.

8-Spending too Much Time on Metatags

While creating metatags are important, your descriptions and meta keywords alone won’t drive traffic to your website.

9-Crafting Keywords for an Untargeted Audience

Another top 10 mistake-using keywords crafted for an undefined audience. Effective marketing is always fashioned for a specific audience.

10-Believing all Search Engines Operate the Same Way

If you want to optimize your search engine results, you have to individualize your strategy for each. Google search engines aren’t as impacted by tactics that might resonate with Yahoo!

If after looking over this top ten SEO mistake list you discover that your SEO strategy has lapsed- never fear, none of these mistakes are difficult to correct.
