How to Engage People On Twitter

When I opened my Twitter account in December 2008, I employed a strategy I got from a goo-roo.

Like a lot of goo-roo strategies, it didn’t work.

What was it?  I used automation software to follow/unfollow people.  I used automation software to blast content 24/7

Here is why it didn’t work:

  1. Crap Content.  Basically. I was spamming ads and various sales pitches.
  2. Zero Engagement.  I didn’t reach out to any of my followers, and on the rare occasions when one of them reached out to me, I didn’t know how to handle them.

So after persisting with the strategy for a year, I gave up.  But I didn’t shut my account; I just let it sit there, unloved and unwanted.  And for the next few years, if someone asked me about using Twitter to generate leads, I told them to forget about it.  ‘A waste of time’ was my usual response.

The Turnaround

Fast forward to today and things are very different.  Why?  Well, last year I got to know some high profile bloggers and a few of them told me they thought Twitter was an excellent way to promote their business.  They gave me some clues, so I filed them away in the dark recesses of my mind.

Early this year I met a few other people who were also doing great with Twitter.  One of them outlined his strategy to me.  So the accumulation of ‘evidence’ that Twitter does indeed work, providing the right approach is employed, convinced me to try again.

Now I get daily leads, and the even better news is that some of the leads convert into paying customers.  So I am very happy that I finally cracked the Twitter code.

One of the keys to success on Twitter is to tweet lots of useful content.  So that’s what I do now.  I tweet my helpful blog posts, success quotes, success images, and other people’s valuable content.  I only tweet my promotional content spasmodically.

The other big key is engagement.  Effective engagement acts like rocket fuel to your marketing activities.  So I respond to every like, comment and share.  I also chat with people using the direct messaging feature.  When talking with people on Twitter, it’s important to note that active engagement is vital.  Most people haven’t got a clue how to do it.  So I recorded a video which will give you some engagement insights.
