Becoming an affiliate marketer sounds like a great way to earn money online. All you do is promote and wait for the check to arrive. You don’t need to start from scratch. The product or service is ready, just waiting for you to sell it.

Sounds simple enough, right? You just need to find the best affiliate programs that pay the big bucks.

Think again.

Affiliate marketing works, but there is no such thing as the best programs. The money does not fall from trees. You still need to work hard for it and if you want to be successful in this field, you need to choose the right affiliate program. Below are some tips to help you trim down the choices:

Search for a Suitable Program

Firstly focus on products that suits your interest.

It’s easier to sell a product if you are passionate about it. When it comes to this industry, you can find a program that matches exactly what you enjoy to read, write and talk about.  Despite this, the program must stack up financially.  If you find a product you like but if the margins are not good, how are you going to make money from a program like that?  Most affiliate programs revolve aroubnd the sale of small ticket products.But the problem with this apporoach is that it will take many many sales to make a living.  For instance if an affiliate product offers a commission of say $30 per sale, to make $10,000 a month you will need more than 300 new customers a month a virtually impossible task.

On the other hand if you select a program which also includes some big ticket products in their portfolio, then the likelihood of making it a profitable endeavour increases exponentially.

Commit for the Long Haul

In order to find success as an affiliate marketer, you should be in it for the long haul. Commit to the business because it will take time and effort to learn the nuts and bolts.  The first few weeks may not compensate you for your efforts. But hang in there. All of this is a learning process. If you keep at it, you’ll eventually see the silver lining.

Pick the Right Product Cateogry

Choosing the right affiliate program is just the start. Once you’ve chosen, it’s time to pick between product types. There are the one-time payment products with higher commissions and the residual products with smaller monthly commissions.

Either way, you get paid for your promotional efforts.

But going back to the second tip, if you’re in this for its long term earning potential then you should know that residual products are the better option.

When evaluating affiliate programs it is important that the company has an effective high converting sales funnel.  Many funnels do not convert well and this of course will impact adversely on your ability to make money.  Look for effective squeeze pages and sales pages which include one time offers and bonuses for prospects who buy quickly.

But more than this.  Their should be attractive upsell products that convert well.  And of course you need to ensure that you will participate in any higher value sales that flow from the sales process.  Beware: some affiliate companies will pay you a high percentage margin for the initial sale but freeze you out of all subsequent sales.  These programs are essentailly paying you a fee to build their list, not yours

Look for Good Support

Another important element to look for when choosing an affiliate program is support. As an affiliate, you should expect appropriate support whenever needed.

One way to check on the program’s support system is to ask current affiliates. Better yet, ask the owner directly. If the owner is able to answer questions readily and provide materials, that’s usually a good sign. Some owners even go the extra mile providing tips and suggestions for their affiliates for greater chances of success.

Prioritize Quality

Just like with any business, quality can make or break your venture. At the end of the day, it‘s all about you believing in what you are promoting and selling. Poor quality products are hard to sell and even harder to believe in. It makes perfect sense to opt for a product that doesn’t promise the moon but has a reliable track record.

Look beyond the hype and too good to be true promises. Always prioritize quality over quantity. Good quality products are always a safe bet regardless of the industry you’re in.

If you’re ready to become an affiliate marketer, buckle up and enjoy the ride. It’s going to be bumpy at times but the rewards are worth it if you keep going. Remember, if others have done it, so can you!
