Facebook Messenger Follies

An Alternative to Pitching and Spamming Your New Facebook Friends

Most marketers tell me that generating leads and making sales online is hard.

Not just hard, but DAMN HARD!

Perhaps you’ve tried many different methods, systems, and strategies, yet no matter how hard you try, online success is proving elusive.

In this post, I’m going to share some proven ideas using the simple Facebook Messenger tool. No doubt you’re familiar with Messenger – most people are, but the problem is that most marketers don’t know how to use it.

Before I show you the right way to use this fabulous tool, let’s look at how most people use it. I’ll start with an example of a pitch someone sent me 60 seconds after accepting his friend request:

HIM: “Hey, Johno – what’s up? How’s business – crushing it?”

ME: “Yep, crushing some pineapples at the moment, thanks for asking.”

HIM: “I mean, are you making a ton of money in your business now?”

ME: “I do ok, no complaints.”

HIM: “Exactly how much are you making each month?”

ME: “Oops, do you work for the tax department?”

HIM: “I need to know so I can help you.”

ME: “Gee, seeing as I don’t know you from a bar of soap, I’m not quite ready to hand over last year’s accounts. But thanks for asking”

After my last response, I thought he would give up on me, but like a horror movie that never seems to end, he pressed on regardless.

After my last response, I thought he would give up on me, but like a horror movie that never seems to end, he pressed on regardless.

“I completely understand,” he replied.

He didn’t.

“So, business is going well?”

“Do you want to make more money in your business?”

On he went, like a broken record. In the end, I gave him the flick, and unfriended and blocked him.

A Better Way

If the previous example is familiar to you, welcome to the Spammers Victims Club.

Membership entitles you to whine and moan about all the creeps who invade your space on Messenger and annoy the heck out of you.

On the other hand, if you’re sick of complaining about spammers and want to find a better way of using Messenger to build your business with new friends, I have some quick tips for you – take a look:

1). Comment On Posts First

Don’t immediately hop on Messenger; instead, take a look at their posts, leave a nice comment on one of them, and do it again the next day.

2). Send Message 1

After commenting on your new friend’s posts for a few days, reach out on Messenger and say something like this: ‘Hey John, great to connect, I look forward to seeing your posts.” A few days later, you can send Message 2.

3). Send Message 2

Say this: ‘I liked your recent post about XYZ; thanks for sharing. Then ask a relevant question about their situation. If you’re selling a product or service to businesses, the question would be business-related.

If you’re a life coach, ask a soft question, like ‘how has COVID affected things in your world?’ One thing leads to another, and before you know it, you have a pleasant conversation happening.

At this point, you may be thinking, ‘how the heck do I turn pleasant conversations into leads, sales, and money?’ Well, that’s another story for another day. Can’t wait? Great I like talking to people in a hurry. Here’s what you should do – reach out to me on Messenger, and I’ll give you some free help, ok?
